PHOTOGRAPHER CLAUDIA KUNIN VISITS AIPH NOV. 10TH

Please join us on Monday, November 10th, from 12:00 tO 1:00 in the studio 6th floor. Claudia Kunin discuss two body's of work, Ghost Stories and Holy Ghosts.

Ghost Stories reflect Claudia's interest in 19th photographs, specifically daguerreotypes as she uses one dag image reflected into another... she carefully chooses the images to couple and then photographs the result. She then turns it 3D and the final image comes alive and tells a possible story about these people that no longer exists giving them a new voice, a new presence. In Holy Ghosts, Claudia is inspired by ancient myths and religious icons. Every aspect of each finished image is a 'montage' of photographically collected elements both natural (land, water, sky, fire, human figures, snakes, etc.) and fabricated. Claudia herself photographs every element that goes into the making of these images... they are the ultimate example of "The Directorial Mode". The 3D aspect forces a presence of divinity in an existential world.

It's the eternal question: will that wee little lad that sits atop our grand city hall steeple finally be appeased? can we finally break the curse?

For those of you who aren't Phillies fans I would recommend staying quiet this week. It's been too long that we've waited for some sign of victory from any of the four pro teams in this city, that some people might get, umm "upset", if they hear you rootin for the other team.

Make sure to throw the salt over your shoulder and say a few Hail Marys or two as the first game gets underway!

Art In City Hall: The Green Exhibit

More than a century after The City of Philadelphia's Art in City Hall exhibition program celebrates its 56th group exhibition for local emerging and professional artists. The Green Exhibit highlights the artistic achievements of 45 Philadelphia area artists whose works reflect issues and concerns about the environment. SO it looks as if we’ve all survived the first week, at least most of us, and are heading into the home stretch towards midterms.

Ok, sorry I know I shouldn't rush it, but that first smell of fall, wood burning and leaves crunching, the constant chatter of the presidential candidates and the looming issue of, "I have no idea what I want to be for Halloween", combines to create a sense of excitement here at ol' AIPH.

American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh

Trained at Chicago's famed Institute of Design, Art Sinsabaugh (1924-1983) made his artistic breakthrough in the early 1960s with a giant "banquet" camera that produced 12 x 20-inch negatives. He developed a unique methodology that utilized the extra-large-format contact prints cropped (sometimes dramatically) to evoke the sweeping horizons he saw in nature. He was a landscape photographer in the broadest sense: he photographed the spaces—both rural and urban—that we inhabit.

The retrospective "American Horizons: The Photographs of Art Sinsabaugh," organized by the Indiana University Art Museum, represents the first complete survey of the artist's career ever assembled. It includes over eighty-five photographs, with the majority drawn from the Art Sinsabaugh Archive at Indiana University, Bloomington. The retrospective is accompanied by the long-awaited monograph on the artist, written by Keith F. Davis, noted photo-historian and the exhibition's guest curator, and a 19-minute video on the artist's life, produced by the Indiana University's Radio-Television Services and recently broadcast nationally by PBS.

NEWS
Another worthy mention--our visionary Senate has passed bill S2913 The Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act and the House of Representatives is expected to follow suit. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the concept, according to Mark Dery of Print Magazine "orphan works are works whose copyright status is uncertain for any number of reasons. The author may be dead and the heirs to the copyright unknown; the author may have never registered the work with the copyright office, or the work may never have been published, in the conventional sense, but simply found adrift on the we, say because somebody scanned and uploaded it without any identifying information." This is a major issue for those in the creative industry and something all of us should be aware of. For a full accounting of this issue check out the Print article at

John Weiss has been a photographer for thirty years. He began at M.I.T. as an apprentice to Minor White, the legendary photographer and educator. Later, he earned his M.F.A. at the Rhode Island School of Design, where he studied with Harry Callanan and Aaron Siskind. John was Professor of Art and Coordinator of Photography at the University of Delaware, where he established his own record for excellence as both a maker of expressive images and as an educator. Numerous prominent public institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris, have collected Weiss’s photographs..

TIME: EXHIBITION OF CONTEMPORARY COLLOTYPE PRINTS

In conjunction with our ongoing exhibition, “Time: Exhibition of Contemporary Collotype Prints,” Project Basho is hosting an accompanying lecture on collotype by James Hajicek. The lecture which is open to public will be held this Friday, April 11th at 6:45 pm at Project Basho Gallery.

James Hajicek is a professor at The School of Art at Arizona State University. His area of interest is late 19th century photographic printing processes. He leads the 19th-century photo processes program, teaches classes in photogravure and collotype, and has extensively researched both collotype and woodburytype printing processes.

The gallery will also be open this Thursday evening as a part of 2nd Thursday Gallery Openings in the area. The exhibition of contemporary collotypes features 21 prints of photographs by Emmet Gowin, Eikoh Hosoe, Graciela Iturbide, Koichiro Kurita, John Pfahl, Ryuji Taira, George Tice, and Arthur Tress. They are monochromatic as well as full color printed on handmade Japanese Gampi paper. The exhibition runs through April 27th.

For this traveling exhibition of the collotype prints in the US, Benrido has created a one-of-a-kind, beautifully hand-crafted, limited edition portfolio which consists of sixteen collotype prints from eight prominent fine art photographers. An accompanying essay by James Enyeart, the former Director of George Eastman House is also included. At the lecture, this portfolio as well as other collotype portfolios that Benrido has created will be on display.

The lecture is sponsored by Benrido and Friends of Project Basho.ho.

This year’s Photo Review International Photography Competition will be juried by Julie Saul, Director, Julie Saul Gallery, New York City. The Photo Review’s is “a competition with a difference” that enables thousands of people across the country to see the accepted work in our 2008 competition issue. Also, the prize-winning photographers will be chosen for an exhibition at the photography gallery of The University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Awards include a Microtek ArtixScan M1 Dual Media Scanner ($650), SilverFast HDR Studio digital camera RAW conversion software from LaserSoft Imaging ($499), a Lensbaby 3G Lens and Wide Angle / Telephoto Kit ($359), a $250 gift certificate from Calumet Photographic, a $250 gift certificate for Museo Fine Art Paper, Lowepro camera bags ($200 and $100), two $50 gift certificates from Sprint Systems, and $250 in cash prizes.

Because their work was seen in The Photo Review, past winners have been given one-person exhibitions, have had their work reproduced in other leading photography magazines, and have sold their work to collectors throughout the country. An entry fee of $30 for up to three prints or slides, and $5 each for up to two additional prints or slides, entitles all entrants to a copy of the catalogue. In addition, all entrants may subscribe to The Photo Review for $35, a 20% discount.

All entries must be received by mail between May 1 and May 15, 2008.
